Former KAMELOT Frontman Sings At Norwegian Wedding; Video Available
June 2, 2011Video footage of former KAMELOT singer Roy Khan (full name: Roy Stre Khantatat) performing the band's song "A Sailorman's Hymn" at a recent wedding in Norway can be viewed below.
Khan announced his departure from KAMELOT in April after taking several months off to recover from a "burnout." He explained in a statement, "I told the guys in the band already last fall (well after my burnout) that I was leaving the band. Naturally enough, they were shocked (as was the label and everyone else working with KAMELOT). In addition to risk of dropping ticket sales, they wanted to give me time to think things over, and so I did. My decision still stands; it is finished.
"I am currently spending time with my family in Norway taking it easy and wondering profoundly what the future is going to bring. Communication with the outer world has been so and so, but I have had several talks with Thomas [Youngblood, KAMELOT guitarist/mainman] along the way, although I am still called in sick.
"I am terribly sorry that my decision is affecting so many others and I want you to know I wish the band and associates all the best for the future and that I enjoyed every second in the spotlight. How could I not?! They were nourished by the best fans in the world!
"I am eternally thankful for everything you and KAMELOT have given me and equally sorry that it has to end here. The good news is; God was there after all..."
When asked about Khan's decision to leave the band, KAMELOT guitarist Thomas Youngblood told Metal-Trails.com in a May 11, 2011 interview, "I thought it was premature, because when you're burned out, you don't wanna make those kinds of decisions. We'd been working together for 10-plus years, and I've heard about this burnout syndrome taking time to get through it. There was really no reason to make that decision now; we're not gonna make a new record 'till next year. But it was something that I guess he felt compelled to have to do. I'm not totally sure why, but it is what it is."
Regarding possible candidates for the singer position in KAMELOT and what the band will be looking for in a new vocalist, Youngblood said, "I definitely don't wanna say any names right now, but we've gotten a lot of e-mails from people that are known, people that are unknown. Obviously they have to have a certain charisma, they have to understand the dynamics of what KAMELOT is and also what we're gonna be on the next record. Vocally, they have to be a master at what they're doing. So there's a lot of elements. There's also a social part of it making sure they have no religious restrictions, no addiction issues, they don't have a girlfriend or a wife that says, 'You can't tour,' or something like that. All I can say is that so far a lot of the e-mails I've gotten have been very encouraging."
